Having heard/read so much about this Québec-based science fiction writer, I knew that I wouldn't be disappointed. In the Mother's Land, Élisabeth Vonarburg (Bantam Spectra, US, ) "Vonarburg's writing has a seriousness of purpose that much American science fiction, even some of the best, lacks; moral issues and intellectual debates are an important and exciting part of her work. Change may be necessary, but one has a sense, in this novel, of how. "In the Mother's Land" features a blurb by Ursula Le Guin, a sure sign of quality, and is rather similar to Le Guin's "social science fiction" in the way that it invents a society and then watches it change over a period of years.
